The Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Helath (VPGH) is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, housed in the College of Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University. Peer Recovery Specialists with VPGH function as a role model to peers, exhibit competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills, serve as an advocate, provide consumer information and peer support to individuals with gambling issues, including connecting them to other support services. The PRS performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, to regain independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. As part of the 500 hours of peer supervision o satisfy the requirements of PRS certification, the volunteer position provides services under the supervision of a CPRS and other staff at VPGH.
This training is a mandatory prerequisite for becoming a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) in Virginia. The training is offered by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
